Detailed Review of Winix C555 Air Purifier
Detailed review of Winix Air Purifier
According to the manufacturer’s instructions, the Winix C555 air purifier is suitable for use in:
- In the kitchen;
- Bedrooms;
- Children’s rooms;
- in libraries;
- classrooms;
- in small office spaces (e.g. home offices).
And in Winix C555 there is a proprietary technology “intelligent” air purification. That is, the device has a whole group of sensors, which in several indicators to monitor the current quality of air in the room. And the rotation speed of the fan is regulated on this basis. Of course, you can also change the modes yourself.
Design and usability
The design is traditional, as for Winix air cleaners. Placement is on the floor. The front panel is louvered and it is through it that the air is sucked in by the fan. The color of the device is white. But the upper panel where all the control elements are located is black, which is a real surprise for this manufacturer. But all this looks absolutely neutral without attracting attention. Due to this, the cleaner can be successfully placed in any room, regardless of the existing interior.
The control panel is placed at an angle. The cleaner can therefore be placed even at height. This will not affect the ease of operation in any way. The basic buttons are 5 pieces. Even those who often have difficulties with modern household appliances will not find it difficult to understand the control.
The remote control is not included in the set, you cannot buy it separately either. Setting up through a smartphone is also not supported because of the missing WiFi module inside (it is available in WInix C545, which will cost a little more).
Winix C555 is made of ABS plastic, which is approved for recycling. The manufacturer traditionally cares about the purity of the environment. The total weight (without packaging, with filters installed) is 17.6 pounds.
Noise level
The minimum noise level during operation is only 27 decibels. It can be compared to the quiet rustle of the wind outside the window. This is exactly the noise when using the “night” mode of operation. The fan rotates at minimum speed and automatically turns off if the air quality according to the information from the sensors is “good” or “excellent”.
The maximum noise level is not specified by the manufacturer in the technical documentation. But, if we believe the reviews of the buyers themselves, it does not exceed 45 dB.
Air filter
The Winix C555 uses a 5-stage air purification system consisting of the following steps:
- Preliminary. The air is passed through a louvered filter that traps large debris fractions, like animal hair, hair, dust, and so on.
- Mechanical. The air passes through the louvered filter, but with a smaller mesh size. It retains the remaining trash fractions.
- Coal filter. Its task is to clean the air from various chemical vapors. It also neutralizes unpleasant odors. But, unlike other cleaners, this one performs the destruction of chemical compounds into derivatives.
- HEPA-filter. Detains particles ranging in size from 0.3 microns and more. That is, it was with his help removed from the air allergens, provoking allergic reactions, and attacks of asthma.
- PlasmaWave. This is a special ionizer, whose task is to neutralize organics. That is, it purifies the air from pathogenic bacteria and viruses, reducing their concentration by about 99% of the original.
Filters are placed in such a way that most of the dirt remains in the first 2 layers. They are not replaceable and can be simply removed and rinsed under running water. That is why the allowable lifetime of a HEPA filter replacement here is at least 6 months!
And an important note: PlasmaWave can be switched off here.
Air quality
Traditionally for Winix, the purifier has an air quality indicator. This is a small light indicator on the control panel that can glow in 3 colors (red – the air is dirty, orange – good cleaning quality, blue – excellent). Inside the purifier, there are sensors that constantly monitor the concentration of dust and chemical and organic compounds in the air.
And a modified HEPA class 12M filter is used here. This means that the layer through which all the air passes is enlarged. Therefore even the smallest fractions of allergens are reliably trapped in it.
Power Consumption Level
The maximum level of electricity consumption is 65 Watt*h. But this is only relevant when the maximum rotation speed and the PlasmaWave function are enabled. In “night” mode the device consumes about 15 – 20 Watt*h. If the smart air purification mode is switched on, the purifier uses not more than 1 kWt*h in 1 day even in large rooms with a strongly polluted environment.
Power supply – from the electric network with voltage up to 120 Volt. Not compatible with 220 volts.
Coverage
The manufacturer’s official website states that this cleaner is ideal for rooms up to 250 square feet. This means that in such rooms, in just 1 hour the air will pass through the device 3 times, thereby guaranteeing a perfect quality of cleaning. Theoretically, it can also be used in rooms around 400 square feet, but only if the overall dust level is relatively low.
When using the smart mode of operation, the allowable life of one filter is at least 6 months. According to reviews, it has to be replaced in most cases after 9 to 12 months. On the control panel, there is a corresponding light indicator, which lights up if the filter does not provide the proper level of air purification.
But the grille panel can be removed and washed under running water. It is only held by plastic latches. It is recommended to perform this procedure at least 1 – 2 times a month, which will increase the allowable service life of the HEPA filter.
Final thoughts
The Winix C555 is one of the best choices for those looking for an inexpensive air purifier that is as good as more expensive models in terms of cleaning quality. It is more than enough for one or two small rooms. The PlasmaWave function, if necessary, can be turned off. The manufacturer’s warranty is 24 months (does not apply to consumable accessories). And it is international, that is, it is valid regardless of the country in which the device was purchased.
Winix C555 is rightfully considered one of the most successful models of the manufacturer. Most buyers give preference to this cleaner because of its affordable cost and high reliability. And its only drawback is a too simple design. But all this is explained by the fact that the device belongs to the budget price category.
